Since service pack 2 I can't open word files directly

I'm using office XP Prof. and norton antivirus 2005. Since I followed the
service pack 2 instalation instructions I can get to my word documents by
opening word first then finding the files but I can't open word files
directly. When I try the status bar - file tab blinks on and off and the
doc never opens. I can only get rid of the blinking it if I shut down. Is
there a fix to this?

Disable the Office Plug-in in Norton AntiVirus.
