If I have a crossover cable can I just connect each end to 2 windows
2000 pro machines ethernet cards and share files between them? How
would I go about it?
TIA.

There are many ways to do this but the following is based
on TCP/IP. You can assign each computer a non-routable IP
address and enable sharing. For example,

Computer 1 - IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Computer 2 - IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Assuming you have File and Printer Sharing service
installed, you can right click on folder(s) you want to
share and select 'Sharing' option to setup sharing.
