Is there any difference in an older USB cable and a USB 2.0 cable, other
than marketing hype and gold connectors?

Yes there is a difference, USB2 rated cables have better shielding. Whether
or not that difference is sufficient to require you spend extra for a USB2
cable is another matter. In my experience I have never had a problem using
'USB1.1' cables with USB2 devices. YMMV
