Simple outlook question

i need to archive my old mails as they exceed 2 GB now, but i was wondering
if i archive them will it delet them from outlook, because that is what i
need...
and then i will backup the arcive for possible later use on a dvd.

Yep, archiving moves them to another pst-file.

....but it will not make the original PST file smaller.
If you archive enough, you may use the compact function to make it smaller.

In case you backup the archive.pst for possible later use on a dvd,
remember you can't open the pst file from dvd (cd). In case you want to
get the archived email, copy the archive.pst back to your harddisk and
then open it via MS outlook (as an extra pst file)
