Simple network between PC and Laptop - HELP

Hi
I have a good up to date PC (P4 2.8Mhz) and an IBM Thinkpad 1200 (slightly
older than PC, P3 750Mhz)
The PC has an Ethernet slot on motherboard. The Thinkpad has a ethernet slot
on the back.
Both run XP home but the Laptop has has been well used and XP re-installed
etc.
I have got a crossover cable and simply just want to network the two so we
can share a internet connection and a printer.
The PC has no trouble recogising its network adapter but the lap top will
not and after going through the hardware install wizard it only installs a
"Micirsoft Loop back adapter"
BUT after running "Network Wizard" no response from PC in recogonising Lap
top and Vice Versa.
Help on how to set this up please or get software for ThinkPad to install it
in built ethernet adaptor.

Make sure it is setup in the BIOS.
What does device manager say on the adaptor, anything?

try wireless.. if the laptop supports it

get an ADSL router/ethernet switch they are normally all in one devices,
that might help too

I formatted and re-installed XP on the lap top recently. The device manager
on the lap top shows NO Network Adaptor. I have gone through the ADD
HARDWARE wizard in the control panel but it does not find one. I can force
an installation of something called a "Microsoft Loop Back Adaptor" then
this shows up on the device manager under "Network Adaptor".
There was one prior to the format process and obviously there is physically
one in the think pad as i can plug the crossover cable in.

Go to the IBM site and see what drivers there are for that adaptor.
Install them. Sound's like it is an old laptop it is is not P&P.

If you have difficulty identifying what actual make it is, try Aida32
or Belarc Advisor and see if they can identify it.

Also you never said if it was enabled in the BIOS.
