Simple file sharing

Daniel Hjertholm

Hi!

Here's my problem: I've turned of simple filesharing om my XP Pro because i
want some folders to be password-protected, while others should be
accessable to everyone in the network. But now others in the network have to
type in a userame and password to get access to all my sharde folders,
inkluding those with permissions and share permissions set to "everyone".
How can i fix this problem without enabeling the guest account or switching
back to simple file sharing?

"Everyone" permission means "everyone who has an account on this
computer". It doesn't mean "all users".

With simple file sharing disabled, XP Pro requires a user who wants to
connect from a client computer to have an account on the server
computer (the one that owns the shared folder). To do that without
prompting the user for a user name and password on each access
attempt, you can either:

1. Log into the client computer with a user name and password that
match an existing account on the server computer.

or:

2. Create an user account (with the same user name and password) on
the server computer for each user who wants to connect from a client
computer.

Daniel,

You have 2 choices:
# Enable Guest, so some folders can be accessed by everybody. Restrict
permissions on all folders you don't want Guest to access.
# Disable Guest, so all folders require account / password for access. If you
want to provide access to any folders without account / password to be manually
entered, you have to setup accounts (with matching passwords) on your server to
equal to all accounts used on the potential clients (by the others on the
network).

The bottom line? Either Guest access, or authenticated non-Guest access.
