OE is about as simple as they get. Why not make a little guide for her.

Grandma's not very tech savvy. We have a post-it note next to the power
button that says, "Push Here, Dummy". (At least she has a great sense of
humor!) I'm looking for a simple email program for her. She's struggled
with Outlook Express. I tried switching her to Thunderbird, but she
struggles with that too.

Any simple email programs for grandmas?

My 85 year-old Mother-in-Law copes quite happily with Outlook 2003.....

Get a good screen capture utility, create a word document and make a simple
step by step user's guide with text and screen shots.

Now that AOL email is free, try that. They have a pretty simple interface.

Does your ISP offer some type of web mail interface? All she needs to
use is a web browser.

Often when people look at applications they see them differently. Older
people have trouble shifting focus. It is possible that when she looks at
Outlook Express she sees too much which causes her to feel lost. Try
changing the View->Layout to limit the appearance. For example limit the
Layout to "Outlook Bar" and "Toolbar" and uncheck everything else. Also have
the mail sort by "Received" so it is at the top.

This simple layout might be what she needs to get started.

Some ISP's such as Earthlink offer their own proprietary email software. For
example, I use their mailbox client for email and OE for newsreader
primarily.
