Simple Accounts Problem

Brian Taylor

How can I get the "SIP Communications Service Account" option to show under
Windows Messenger 5.0 Tools/Options/Accounts (in order to connect to Live
Communications Server)?

It appears and works on all computers except one (they all run Windows XP)
that only shows the ".Net Passport" and "Exchange" account options.

you probably don't have the latest Windows Messenger version
with SIP support installed on that machine.

Download it from http://messenger.microsoft.com/.

Hi Thomas,

This link seems to install version 4.7 (mmssetup.exe). This gives ".Net
Passport" and "Communications Service" account options. If I use the latter
option then a username/password dialog box comes up and nothing I seem to
enter will make a connection.

On the other hand version 5.0 (install.exe) seems to have SIP support as it
works on any other Windows XP (overwriting the default version). (I have
even tried manually removing Messenger on the file system and the registry
but I must be missing something.)

Sorry Thomas - I didn't explain myself very well.
I actually tried both version 4.7 and 5.0. The Help|About says 5.0.0482. I
notice that the "SIP Communications Service Account" option does not come up
for any users logged onto the computer so I suspect a machine wide setting
or something - I'm sure it has to be a simple problem.

For the record the problem is the scenario 1 identified below (c/o Bill Peng
[MSFT]). I had to give myself admin rights to the HotFix folder
((C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB828758$) to complete the uninstall.

Scenario 1: You've installed HotFix 828758 (Availability of the Windows XP
COM+ 1.5 Rollup Package 6)

This issue is addressed in WinSE Bug #79281.
This fix is scheduled to be included in the next rollup fix for COM+

As a work around, simply uninstall HotFix 828758 from Add or Remove
Programs to resolve this issue.

Scenario 2: You have configured fixed port assignments.

This issue occurs if you have incorrectly configured the fixed port
assignments for Windows Messenger. This issue may be caused by conflicting
port assignments.

Please refer to the following KB Article to troubleshoot this problem:

SIP Communications Service Account Does Not Appear in Windows Messenger 5.0
After You Configure Fixed Port Assignments
