Silverlight install asks for disk in cd-rom

I once had silverlight on my computer and, for reasons unknown, deleted it.
I've been able to watch instant movies on netflix with no problem until today
when I was prompted to download silverlight. During the installation, I'm
told I need a disk with the install program on it, which I don't have (Do
they actually exist, I wonder?). I've gone through every file that I know of
to remove every trace of silverlight, in hopes of starting a fresh install (I
even went into the registry, with serious trepidations, and deleted the
folder in the "software" registry, but still I'm being asked for a disk.
I've installed the microsoft.net installer and everything else I needed
(supposedly) for the install but silverlight still won't install. Can anyone
PLEASE tell me (in simple terms) what I have to do to get this program to
install?

Thank you.

From WHERE did you download the Silverlight installation program? Was
it here ...

http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/

I've never heard of Silverlight being distributed on a CD. Only know of
it as a download from Microsoft. You sure the CD you are being asked
for isn't for the Windows installation?

Thanks for your response.
I've been to the silverlight site, and several support sites, I've
downloaded web platform installer and a bunch of other things that "prepared"
my computer to install

I've been to the silverlight site, and other support sites, and have
downloaded web platform installer and several other programs which, in print,
was just what I needed to install sl. Each time I tried again, I'd get the
same box looking for the disk. I tried both the xp disk and the sp2 disk,
but to no avail. There must be something of the old sl that's still on my
computer. If I go into add/remove programs, it's still listed there,
although the "remove" button is gone. I've even tried to get rid of it using
"easycleaner", which will, at least, remove the reference but even that won't
work. It's got to be a registry thing (and that'll put the kabosh on getting
it fixed, since it unnerves me to touch that).

I truly appreciate your responding. I'm open to all suggestions.

Did you check if System Restore has a restore point close to but before
when you installed Silverlight? I recently installed v3 of Silverlight
but there is no restore point listed for that install (so Microsoft
chose not to do an auto-save for that install).

The items in the Add/Remove Programs are listed under the following
registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

The subkey under there that records the installation (and also the
uninstall string for the command) for Silverlight v3 is:

{89F4137D-6C26-4A84-BDB8-2E5A4BB71E00}

Under that subkey, the Uninstall string is:

MsiExec.exe /X{89F4137D-6C26-4A84-BDB8-2E5A4BB71E00}

You could try to run that command to see if Silverlight gets
uninstalled.

It was scary stuff (I really hate touching the registry), but it worked.
Later, I spoke with a friend who told me that there's a free, downloadable
program called "windows install cleaner" that'll do the same thing (where was
he 3 days ago?). Although silverlight is now gone, for a long time, I've had
the same problem with Ad-aware... when trying to update that program, I was
prompted to uninstall the older version, which I attempted to do while the
new install program was still running (I wasn't told to close out the new
install first), and was never able to re-install the new version of Ad-aware
because parts of the old version were still embedded. I searched for any
files that contained ANYTHING of Ad-aware's and deleted everything I could
find, but still it showed up in my add/remove list, just like silverlight
(although "Easycleaner" did get rid of the Ad-aware entry, which it couldn't
do for silverlight ). So I downloaded the program, ran it, and up came a
list of programs (including Ad-aware). I highlighted it and hit delete and
now it's completely gone and I was able to install the new version without a
hitch. Your method worked (though I sweated out every minute) and I thank
you for all of your help. Two solutions in one day, I'm a lucky guy. Thanks
again.

Good health,
Nick
