OL2003 not using word, having upgraded from OL2k
I have a number of email accounts, several of which have specific
signatures. However when creating a new msg the default mail account is
used, thus the wrong sig.is used for the account I wish to send with.
Presumably I'm missing an obvious solution - other than deleting the sig.and
inserting the correct one.

If you want Outlook to switch signatures when you switch accounts, you must use Word as the editor.

Signatures per account only work with Word as the Editor in Outlook 2003.
Otherwise, you will need to set a default signature and, after composing the
mail, right click on it and select the correct signature for the account.
