And since those files, located in C:\Documents and Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Signatures, are either text, HTML, or RTF, can't you just
edit them to contain whetever you want?

I don't speak for Smiths, and Smiths doesn't speak for me.
While you can edit them, it only changes it for that specific message
format, but doing it through outlook creates the files for you and is easier
for most users.
