I just went through and did Windows up date. It installed several security
patches and three software upgrades. Now, every time I boot up, I get a log
in screen with my name and a flower logo that I have to click in order to
start up. I have been using this computer for a year and this is brand new.
I am the only user and I'm the Administrator. I have not been able to find
out get around this "feature" once or permanently. How do I turn this
"feature" off and return to the old way of working.

Go to the Start menu, click Run, and type in the following:

control userpasswords2

Uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a user name and ... " , and
click the OK button. You will be presented with a password dialog for
the user you want to autologon.

Now when you reboot your system, you will automatically be logged in.

This method did not resolve the problem. Now on boot up, I get an "Unable to
log on because of account restriction" message. I click OK and it goes to
the flower Click my name page. What did I do wrong?

Please help.

Do you have a password on the account?

No, I have been very careful to put NO passwords on this computer (after the
fiasco with my notebook). When I ran control userpasswords2, after
completion, I got a window with "administrator filled in and asked for a
password. I put nothing in and just clicked it OK.

This is about as far as I can help you. My notes just say to run this
'userpasswords2' thing and set to not prompt. I looked at the normal
user account setup and it seems that I can 'create password' for my
account which makes me think I don't have one. Under user accounts in
control panel the 'way users login' is set to no welcome screen. If
that helps.

What version of Windows XP is installed on your computer?

Seeing the "Unable to log on because of an account restriction" message
leads me to believe that Windows XP Home Edition is installed on your
computer and you're trying to automatically logon with the built-in
Administrator account. That's not going to work. With XP Home Edition you
can only log on with the Administrator account in Safe Mode.

If Windows XP Professional is installed on your computer post back with that
information. With XP Pro it's possible to use the Administrator account in
normal mode

If you're running XP Home, try this to fix the problem.

Restart your computer and note the name next to the flower icon. That's the
name of your user account.
Click on the icon and log on to your computer.
Next, run control userpasswords2 again.
Put the check mark back in the box next to "Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer".
In the Users for this computer box, click on the user name that was listed
next to the flower on the Welcome screen earlier.
Now uncheck the box.
Hit the OK button.
You should now see the Automatically Log On box with your user name already
entered.
Click OK.
Restart your computer and see what happens this time.

You can also use TweakUI, a free program from Microsoft, to configure your
computer to automatically log on your account.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Direct Download of TweakUI
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once the program is installed, go to Start -> All Programs ->
Powertoys for Windows XP -> TweakUI.
Click the + sign next to Logon in the left hand column.
Click on Autologon.
In the right hand pane, put a check mark in the box next to
"Logon automatically at system startup".
Enter the name of your user account in the User Name box.
Hit the Set Password button and enter your password twice.
Note: You should skip this step if your account has a blank
password.
Click OK to close TweakUI.
Restart your computer to see if you get the desired results.

Note: If you're not sure how to proceed at least post back with information
about which version of XP is installed on your computer as well as the name
of your user account.

Good luck
