I am using Dell Inspiron 6000, win XP.
Recently I have installed some codecs.

-1st problem the Microphone couldnt be used; the voice couldnt be
recorded.

-I have deinstall codecs; reinstalled the card;
the card appeared once;

but now the system doesn't recognized the sound card Sigma Tel C-Major
Audio;

I do not have the original installation CD for XP; the Dell didnt
provide me with that.

Do you have any idea how to fix that problem:
-to install sound card properly
-the microphone is avalable; this is more challanged task

thanks.

this is written in MSN "Your computer does not have a sound card, or a
sound card is not selected."

Also I cannot use the Microphone. I'd appreciate your ideas, and help.
thanks.

Go to the control panel and select sound and audio devices. on the audio tab make sure that that
your sound card is selected in the default device. In the middle you will see a volume button in
the sound recording section press this, make sure microphone is selected.

Same here with the same Sigmatel Codec.
I'm sure it's a flaw in the driver.
The chip offers boosting the input level up to +40dB but the driver
doesn't seem to use it.

same problem here - been through the suggestions above -- mic still
doesn't work

is there a chance some voice recognition software is interfering?

Similar problem: Dimension E510 with Sigmatel on-board audio.

I can only use the microphone if I check "boost", and hold it 2 inches
from my mouth. I tried to microphones, each of which I had used fine on
other computers.

I was on the phone with Dell, and they claimed that since it was
on-board audio, it would never work well !!

We downloaded and re-installed the sigmatel driver (and they also
wanted to do PC reinstall - but I've not done anything to the system
since I bought it last week!).

Seems to me there is a problem with the sigmatel driver.

I installed a sound card, and plugged the microphone (which works fine
on my co-workers laptop, for example), into it, and I still have the
same problem. So it can't be the driver of the sound card...., but
where **is** the problem?

My name is Idan and I have a Dell Latitude D810 with the same problem
more or less.
my mic is sometimes working and some time not.
I couldn't really understand what is the method behind it.

I have a guessing that it's somehow related to power plug in and
out....

Hi there.

I have the Inspiron 6000 as well and my problem is the Headphone output jack
is not working. The built in speakers work but when I plug in the headphones
nothing plays out of them.

I have a feeling this is the same issue as with the microphone input
(directly beside the headphone output). They probably work off the same card
and require updated drivers for Vista.

If anyone finds a fix for this please let me know.

Thanks

Terry

Have you talked to Dell Support? They would be the first ones to talk to about this.

I'm having the same problem, the help I found from GE said to go to
control panel, then click the speech section, and then click the speech
recognition tab to configure the mic. I DONT EVEN HAVE a SPEECH
RECOGNITION TAB!
and DONT bother calling DELL, sorry david, but DELL SUPPORT SUCKS MORE
THAN ANYTHING ELSE

We NEED real help
If anyone has any suggestions how to get the speech recognition tab up
that might lead us to an answer.

SigmaTel vs. non-responding microphone

I've read hundreds of posts & replies and still haven't run across a viable solution to the non-functioning microphone problem. It's shown up on WinXP, Vista, laptops, desktops, etc. I was using same microphone 2 weeks ago (I record the audio's for our automated phone system) without problems. WHAT HAS CHANGED?
All audio properties and settings have been triple-checked; hardware was removed, rediscovered, and still doesn't work. I checked 2 other Dell Latitude laptops (mine is a D610, another was a D620) with same results. Another test on a dell desktop worked fine, so it's not the microphone. I also tested the onboard headset/speaker jack to see if the onboard may be the problem, and it works. I use the jack on the docking station for the speakers, but I have to use the onboard for the micr.

I hope SOMEONE can provide a usable solution, other than check your audio settings (that answer is almost as bad as "have you tried rebooting?")

Update: I installed Audacity, and I was able to record from that without changing anything. Now imagine my suprise when I, just for the heck of it, went back to Sound Recorder and now it works too. Now I wonder what Audacity replaced that fixed the initial problem?
