Siemens 4200 Modem Installation Problem

Geoff

I am attempting to install ADSL broadband on a friend's laptop (Acer
Travelmate 510 with XP Home SP2 - upgraded from Win98) with the kit supplied
by the ISP. It is a Siemens 4200 modem which the computer refuses to
recognise.

We can get all the way through the install disc until it is time for the
computer to go and set up the modem at which point it says it can not find
the modem.

We are using the USB port as the laptop does not have ethernet. The USB port
works ok because he runs a printer thru it.

The ISP's reaction is: "too bad, the computer is too old"! Any help would
be appreciated please.

unfortunately USB is less reliable than eithenet...
you should be able to get a pcmcia eithernet card for it

Thanks philo but we do recognise that - unfortunately we are talking about a
$200 laptop - hardly worth spending the money on.

It would be nice to have some USB drivers or network drivers for the modem
to work - just don't know where and how to get them.

Try Acer site for winxp drivers specific for the model, as presumably you
relied on default winxp drivers when you updated?

well if you end up not being able to get it working on USB
you can probably get a pcmcia net card on ebay for $10 or so.
