Sidewinder Wheel - Split Axis???

J

John Smith

Hi folks,

Since upgrading to a new computer with XP on it, I've got problems with my
Sidewinder FF Steering Wheel. I've got the generic Sidewinder controller
loaded and calibrated, and it does work. However...

In all the driving games I've tried so far, the brake pedal doesn't work,
and the car goes into full brake/reverse when the gas pedal isn't depressed.
And to repeat, I have calibrated the wheel in the game controller control
panel.

For some games, I can make changes in the game options to work around this
problem. But even for a newer game like "Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2", it
makes driving almost impossible.

Now, in the NFSHP2 readme, it says:

"MICROSOFT (TM) RACING WHEEL PEDALS
===========================
Setting the pedals to split axis mode is not currently supported.
From
the controler properties in the control panel select combined axis
mode."

So, how to I set this? I don't see it anywhere in the controller control
panel?

Thanks in advance!

Works for me using the game controller software (Version 4.0) that came on CD shipped with Sidewinder FF Wheel.

Hi John,

You can open the Control Panel, open the Game Controllers.

You should see the Sidewinder FF Steering Wheel. Change the pedals from
split axis mode to combined axis mode.

You can refer to the link:

Your Link does not work. USB FF Sidewinder wheel works best when you install the supplied controller software (Ver 4.0)
first and then connect the wheel and pedals. Additionally, the Sidewinder software will allow you to customize your wheel's controls to suite your particular game.

The problem is that I don't have the v4.0 software. My wheel is a non-USB
model that came with the v3.0.2 software, and it works perfectly with Win98.

I don't want to have to buy a whole new wheel just because I moved to XP.

Hi John,

Let's try to download the driver at:

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=22821

USER NAME is: driver
PASSWORD is: all

Note: the driver is for the Windows 98. Let's install the driver with the
following steps.

1. Log XP Pro as an administrator.

2. Expand the swv4.zip to c:\swv4 folder

3. Open the c:\swv4\setup folder

4. Right click the setup.exe and select Properties

5. Go to the Compatibility tab, Check the "Run this program in
compatibility mode for" of the Compatibility mode and select "Windows 98/ME"

6. Click OK

7. Double click the setup to install the application.

Steven,
The Sidewinder 4.0 software isn't going to help. The poster stated he is
using a 3.02 device.

John,
Unfortunatly there isn't a fix for your situation. Some games handle
split pedal devices well, others don't. The 3.02 software was written in
..vxd format which isn't supported on NT platforms (Windows 2000 and Windows
XP). There are no planned updates

Hi Joshua,

The Sidewinder 4.0 software is special designed for different Sidewinder
game devices. It's better to contact the PSS as the following steps to see
whether there has the Sidewinder 4.0 of the device you are using. If yes,
they will send you a new Sidewinder 4 software for your device.

Unfortunatly there is only one method to get them the Sidewinder 4.0
software if they don't have the disk. That is to contact PSS and have a new
CD. That is covered in this article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[ln];326246 . The problem
is that the 3.02 software for the fist generation gameport devices was a
unified package, it worked for all the gameport devices, but it was written
in .vxd format because there was no reason to believe at the time the
devices would be used on an NT OS. Then the second generation devices, the
4.0 USB only devices, came out. These each had their own version of the 4.0
software that included support for that particular device.

If not, I think it's better to purchase a USB version game device. The Game
port one is too old for the Windows XP operation system.
