Sidewinder Precision 2

When I shut off my computer, then reboot, my sidewinder
shows up as an unknown usb device. I have to unplug the
joystick and plug it back in again to get XP to recognize
it. What could be causing this? I have already run
through the XP and Gateway troubleshooting techniques.

Sorry for the late reply. Some things for you to try.



1. Try plugging the device in another USB port. This will force PnP to
install the drivers for that port. If you already have plugged the device
into all available ports try step 2.

2. Open Device Manager (Right-click My Computer and choose Properties ->
Hardware tab choose Device Manager). Under "Human Interface Device" you
should have two entries for your joystick. Uninstall them by highlighting
them and then clicking the little computer icon with the red X just under
the menu at the top. You can then either reboot the system and let PnP
redetect the device or right-click the computer at the top of the list and
choose "Scan for hardware changes".

3. Some of the USB joysticks get in a state where some capacitors in the
device get fully charged and then there are detection problems. Try
carefullly using a paper clip or other metal object to briefly short the 4
USB pins on the connector to discharge the capacitors. Remove the object
from the plug and try it in the system again.
