Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel for XP

I read the recent posts giving ideas about how to get the Sidewinder wheel with Windows 98 software to work in XP and I'm still stumped. Could someone give me a step by step? When I go into Control Panel and then game controllers and try to add the MS SW I get a pop up window that says "Your Gameport or Gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please consult Device Manager.". Well I guess that makes sense since when I try to install the 3.x software I get another pop up window that says "Sidewinder Game Devices software 3.x install drivers that are incompatible with this version. COntact MS". This is the gameport version which I can't even find in Device Manager and I wouldn't know what to do if I did. Am I correctly interpreting the posts that say the Sidewinder 98 (with gameport hookup) should work in XP? If so please guide me through the entire process. Thank you very much.

It should work just fine, IF your game port hardware has the latest software
installed for it. If it is on a sound card, make sure you download and
install the latest drivers from the manufacturer. If the port is
motherboard-based, figure out the brand of your motherboard and get the
updates from that manufacturer.

Then, you can plug in the controller in and do the selection steps you
mentioned. Installing the software won't worked because it contains an
unsupported *.vxd format, however Windows XP will install the proper
drivers. You can no longer create "profiles" in Control Panel, but can do
so from within games which have the option.

Hi Chris

Apparently I'm missing something here. My computer is only a few weeks old (a Dell 4600 with nVidia FX 5200 graphics card). Even so I downloaded ther latest drivers from nVidia. When I try to add the controller I still get the pop up window "Your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please consult Device Manager.". When I go into Device Manager I can't even find the gameport

The game port isn't part of your graphics card. You need to see which
device hosts it (sound card or motherboard) and then look for updates. It
doesn't matter if your system was purchased today. What matters is which
drivers the company which built your system used and how old they are. They
could very well be stock drivers from when Windows XP first went on sale in
October, 2001.
