sidewinder ff pro "not connected"

L

LOTORC

i just got an XP machine (dell 4600, 2.6ghz) and can't get
my old sidewinder force feedback pro 1.0 to get
recognized. i tried the troubleshooter and it works on my
win 98 system, but when i try to bring it up on the xp
system, it says "not connected." i've tried everything i
can think of.

i have a generic creative labs sound card that i'm using
just for the joystick port because my dell didn't come
with a joystick port. win xp found drivers for the sound
card right away, and i can see the joyport in my device
mgr - says it's enabled and all. my regular audio is
still being channeled through the integrated sound the
computer came with.

please help! I'd hate to trash a beautiful thing -
windows xp ;)

Hi, lotorc. Firstly, the xtra-putid OS is NOT a beautiful thing.
It's an awful, horrid, and obnoxious monster! It's given me
nothing but grief since the first day I installed it; and it
shows no sign of slowing down in that regard. But maybe
it's just me . . . ???
..
Anyway, I don't know if I can help with your particular problem,
but I had a similar snafu with my USB Sidewinder2. The Device
Manager said everything was fine, but the joystick was a nogo.
A little experimentation revealed the problem, however. When-
ever some device (eg. printer or zip drive) was connected to the
parallel port the joystick abruptly vanishes into the void.
..
So I shut down the poohter, disconnected the device, restarted
the beast, and surprise surprise, the joystick is now there and
fully functional. Weird! So whenever its time to fly I have to
check and make sure the para-port is clear. I'm sure this is the
fault of the xtra-putrid OS because I had no such problems
when the same system was infested by Windows98.
..
So my advice is to physically disconnect your printer (or what-
ever) and then see if that restores your joystick. My guess is
that it will, but then again my poohter is NOT a first-class
system like yours, so I may just be barking up the wrong
virtual tree. In any case, I wish you the best of luck, cause
having no joystick takes all the joy out of flying! :)

Do you have UPnP running in Services? This can also happen because of
"tweaks" as suggested by a couple web sites, wherein Services are
recommended to be discontinued/stopped. Those sites and a PC magazine made
the recommendations without fully explaining there are consequences to those
actions.

Here's a fix for the CL soundblaster, see if it works for you, did for my
SB:
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:

a.. A Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! or Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live!
Value sound card is installed in the computer.

b.. The input/output (I/O) range for the Creative Gameport Joystick is
outside the x200-x20F value range.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, set the I/O range for the Creative Gameport Joystick
device to a value within the x200-x20F range. Do the following methods in
order:

Restart Your Computer in Safe Mode
1.. Click Start , then click Shut Down .

2.. Click Restart The Computer , then click Yes .

3.. As soon as you see the message "Starting Windows 95," or "Starting
Windows 98," press F8.

4.. When the Boot Menu appears, select Safe Mode .

5.. When Windows finishes loading, close the message about Safe Mode.

Set I/O Value for the Joystick Port
1.. Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Control Panel .

2.. Double-click System .

3.. On the Device Manager tab, click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Creative
Miscellaneous Devices to expand the branch.

4.. Click Creative Gameport Joystick , and then click Properties .

5.. On the Resources tab, click to clear the Use automatic settings check
box.

6.. In the Setting based on box, click a basic configuration with an I/O
value between x200 and x20F.

7.. Click OK , and then click OK again.

8.. Shut down and turn off the computer.

9.. Turn your computer on, and then check the status of the SideWinder
game controller.

wurm: Hi, Chris. UPnP? Services? I'm sorry, but I have no idea
what you're referring to.

I haven't been to those sites, so again I don't know what you're
referring to. I haven't done any tweaking either as my hands are
now fully occupied with an error that my Outlook Express is
constantly throwing up in my face every time I start it up. I'm
much more interested in solving that irritating problem than this
parallel-port problem (if that's what it is).
..
However, if you can help me to solve it, I would be most grateful. :)

The directions I furnished are correct for Classic View,
your method is by Category. In case you haven't noticed,
that's a user-choice item for viewing.

eye hadn't noticed ...
..
Am I going to ask a user which they're using or spend
the time to list both ways? No.
..
So then you *always* assume some prior familiarity (with
xp), even when perhaps there is none such? ... hmmmm
..
But feel free to jump in and furnish the answers, if you
want to freely offer assistance as I do. -- Chris H.

That's a *BIG* ten-four, good buddy! :D

P.S. The real-world is quite adept at helping people to
generate much unhappiness within their lives, but not so
quick to generate happiness. Thus it's far easier for
people to be unhappy than to be happy. To ask WHY this is
so, and what can be done about it, is to enter the realm of
pure philosophy, and thus move well out of the narrow range
of competence covered by the vast majority of the world's
professionals and technicians and sundry experts.
