Sidebar Slide Show Appears to be Broken

Hey all,

Weird problem. I was working with a client's computer (I troubleshoot
and fix PC's - still using XP here until I can afford to upgrade to a new
machine). Now I have some experience with Vista as a family member runs it
as well as certain clients. I also set up her computer in the first place.
I noticed here Sidebar was messed up and experienced frequent lock-ups and
graphics corruption (especially around the edges of things, like the
calendar or clock gadgets). The biggest "tell" of this was the fact that
her Slide Show gadget was completely black (as opposed to when the computer
originally was set up and it worked just fine).

Upon playing around, I found out the settings for Slide Show were still
correct (pointing to the Sample Pictures folder). But it simply doesn't
work. I also found out the rest of Sidebar functions normally if you
restart it WITHOUT Slide Show enabled. Everything else seems to work great
(of the gadgets we've tried: Clock, Calendar, RSS New, Weather, etc.). As
soon as Slide Show's enabled, everything goes buggy. Moving and rearranging
gadgets doesn't work right, things get stuck behind other things, adding
gadgets sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, the graphical corruption
around the edges of things appears, and it just locks up and doesn't work as
it should. Disabling Slide Show after it's been started doesn't help until
Sidebar's exited and restarted, and then everything works normally (with the
condition Slide Show is not active).

So it's definitely an issue with Slide Show. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the gadget, looking in the settings.ini file (though didn't
actually alter anything), changing settings and paths to a different
directory, etc. No luck, and I see no reason as to why it *should* be
broken.

Any thoughts? It's a little thing, I know, but frustrating for someone
who likes everything to work right.

Thanks,
Shaun

I haven't seen this particular problem, but I eliminated Slideshow from my
sidebar because it was running my CPUs at 50% or so, at idle. Simplest
solution - don't use it...

Sounds like she also might have problems with display drivers - they're
still evolving so fetch new ones every week or so and see if that helps...

Thanks - the display driver idea is a good one; might be worth
investigating. And for the mean time, I did turn it off, but I really don't
see "don't use it" as an acceptable solution; it just *should* work right.
Thanks for the feedback!

Anybody have any more ideas? Thanks.
