Side Navigation

Can anyone tell me how they created the side navigation for this site... I
want to do something similar, but I don't know how the are getting the text
over the graphics, since the text can be edited in front page.

which part of the side navigation are you referring to.
It looks like an image map on a graphic (the text is actually "within" the
graphic) and some "regular links".

The text links are done with CSS using hover.
The image links are images used as hyperlinks, and the changing text one is an animated gif used as
a hyperlink.
