Shutting down programs on Task Bar but not Task Manager

When I close out a program, Adobe Reader for instance, it will disappear from the task bar BUT if I open Task Manager, it is still open and running. Anyone know why this is happening?

It could be a browser helper that adobe has

installed.You will need this to open hyperlinks to pdf
files
