Shutting down problem

Since I downloaded some updates (or rather Win2k did it automatically
for me) I've had a problem shutting down. The screen message 'Windows is
saving your settings' hangs for about 2 - 3 minutes each time now,
whereas previously it would just take a few seconds. Booting up is fine.

Anyone else had this and know thecause and/or fix for this.

The user profile hive cleanup service may help:

This is an old problem that has resurfaced. You can download a small
utility called UPHclean from Miscrosoft that is supposed to bypass the
problem. (Search the MS site, or Google, for "UPHclean".

You can also reduce the delay from 60 seconds to a much smaller value by
making one simple change. I did this when the problem first ocurred a few
years ago...

start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative Template
System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user profile ... set
enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!

Thanks for all those. I'll give it a go and see what happens. But surely
this problem has to be caused by an update?

The problem has been caused by at least three different updates over the
past few years and has been corrected by one or two. Evidently it stems
from the sort of mistake that Microsoft programmers just can't stop
making.

Murphy's Law of Debugging is: "For every two bugs corrected, one new one
will be created."
