Shutting down CCapp.exe

K

KK

Hello

I have 512Mb RAM, but in Windows Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del / performance) I
see I have only 165 Mb 'available' physical memory. There are a lot of
processes running which I assume are gobbling up the rest.

One of the biggest is CCapp.exe which is Norton Internet Security (NIS). I
could gain 20 Mb by shutting it down, but I can't. If I click 'End process'
in Task Manager I get a message telling me it cannot be shut down. I can't
find a way of shutting it down from inside NIS either.

Does anyone know how to close down CCapp temporarily ?

Thanks

KK

Hi KK,

I think you'd have best results contacting Norton support, in answer to your
question

On another note, why do you want to shut down that process? If all you would
gain is 20MB of RAM, that really isn't very much, and it wouldn't surprise
me if Windows would find a way of using what you just "reclaimed". That
would be normal. In a Windows machine, "free" RAM is wasted RAM. Windows
will always try to find a way to use as much as needed.

Are you experiencing some problem that is prompting you to ask about
shutting down processes?

In your case, its involved with NIS. Others, may be some other Symantec
product. If you end this in task manager, you also disable use of the
Symantec application for that user session.

CCapp.exe is a Symantec file that handles the auto-protect function that runs in
the background scanning folders/files on your machine and the net, it also handles
the email scanning. If you really-really feel your really-really safe and you won't
get a big chunk taken out of your machine, you can disable either one or both in the
options of the application. It's not anything I would recommend doing!!

I,m not at all experienced, in this topic, but I have a similar situation. I
have done some research into the problem, and it seems as though,if you have
to many programs running, then you ought to shut something down , but I don,t
believe it should be Norton -I would be looking at a program that is using a
lot of memory-ones that use a lot are music (wav files), photos, etc. If you
have some of these in use, you could remove them to a removable disk, to free
up some of your memory useage- and as I mentioned earlier, I,m not that
experienced, so I might be all wet, on this subject . Maybe someone will read
what I have written, and give their opinion as to whether I have been of any
help, or if I should have kept my opions to myself.

I think you would be very unwise to even try to shut down NISunless you are
not connected to the internet. You would probably have to close the running
programme in the task bar first - that's the way with Norton AntiVirus, then
shut down ccapp. ou could also shut down live update too

What you really need to find out is why ccapp is using 20mb of RAM? I just
checked mine and it is using 1,212k

With RAM memory being as cheap as it is, I'd opt for a another 512mb RAM, at
under 30 quid these days, it would be safer and a lot easier!
