Heartwill--

If you are on anything but a desktop PC, you can usually tap the escape key
to bring up menu options including "Boot from DVD."

Hi Harris,
Thanks a lot for your help. I just downloaded the vista repair disk and
burned it on cd. But when i tried to restore the system it says: Startup
Repair cannot repair the computer automatically." i am going to try the other
options. I hope this works.
Thanks once again.

I've been particularly impressed with the power of the bootrec switches to
fix broken won't boot Vista and Win 7 even when the cause isn't obvious or
specified in the details that you can click on when Startup Repair runs.

From the command prompt in the Startup Repair menu:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Good luck and let us know,

hi again,
I tried the bootrec in the command prompt at startup repair menu but could
not slove the problem.
The same problem is still there, shuting down and restarting configuring
updates, shutting down and so on.....

Hi Harris,
Just a quick question:
Do you think i can use the command prompt in the startup repair menu to move
my files to an external hard drive?
Thanks

Hi Heartwill--

There sure are ways to use the command prompt to move files and folders from
one drive or directory to another. But what I don't know, because I haven't
tried it, and it is a specialized environment, is whether you can use that
command prompt in Startup Repair to move files or folders or create a batch
file to do it.

http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-567-basic-ms-dos-commands

cd < directory name>

cd is the basic DOS command, it allows you to change directory.

dir [ name of directory]

dir allows you to list all contents of the specified directory.

copy <source> <destination>

Allows you to copy a file from a <source>folder to a <destination folder>.

Theoretically, you should be able to. It's a good question, and I know
you're searching for a way to retrieve and save all your "stuff." I'm
trying to get that done for you. Someone that frequents this group may be
able to answer that question, and I don't have time now to go to Startup
repair and try to do it.

But before you resort to trying that:

Make sure you used all 3 bootrec commands I gave you from Startup Repair's
command prompt. There is another command switch, and running that won't
help you and that's /scanos

***And answer this question for me--I gave you other tools to try including
System Restore from the Startup Repair menu, and the four options at the
Windows Adv Options Menu reached by tapping F8 at the start. What happened
when you tried them? If you haven't, you need to.***

Best,

Hi,
In fact i tried all the options but nothing work. I realised that the pc
it
self has a problem coz it cannot do new installation. It keeps asking to
insert cd and hit a key. I changed dvd player many times but keeps showing
the same thing. I put a new hard drive in the same pc and could not do new
installation, so i realised that there is someting wrong either with
hardware
or something! . I tried to put the harddrive that has the vista ultimate
in
another pc and could boot from the install dvd, but could not repair, i
got
some error that i cannot remember now. So i know for sure that there is
something wrong with the other pc that´s why all the options you gave me
could not work. I tried to move few files using cmd and finally has to
format
the hard drive (fixed in a new pc). I worked on that all of last night and
today. It´s beeing fun. Thanks once again for helping me out.
Best regards.

P.S. Where do you live? I live in Uruguay.

I'm in the US. I don't think I've helped you much, unfortunately, although
I've tried to give you as many options to repair the OS if the problem is
software.

It sounds like there is a hardware problem in that PC, and there may be a
problem with that hard drive at this time, given that you put the HD in
another PC and couldn't repair.

You can try doing a test of the HD by downloading Seagate Tools, or
depending on who makes the pc you're using the HD in, you can do a test of
the HD that has about 75%-95% accuracy.

I'm at a loss as to how to retrieve your info from that HD, andif I
understand you correctly, you couldn't move your files, folders, and docs,
to another drive via the command prompt from Startup Repair, and you
formatted it. I feel badly we couldn't save your information if that's the
case.
