shutdown question

I recently reinstalled xp pro after partition and format. When I shut down
it does not turn my computer off as before. The computer continues running
after windows shut down and displays a white horizontal line across the
center of the screen with arrow heads on the right half. Can anyone explain
this? Thanks in advance.

During the reinstall did you also install the motherboard, video, sound,
Etc. drivers?

Only the sound driver installed. Everything seems fine except for the

That usually indicate either a forked Installation or your Hard Drive is
going Nuts?.

Try to Test the health of your Hard drive by download the diagnostic tool
for it from the manufacturer website and see if it healthy to have the System
installed on it.
Start with the recovery console and run this command:
CHKDSK /R

BTW. why you did the reinstall in the first place?.

I lost my harddrive and after installing xp on a new drive it would not
start after approx a week. I repaired the operating system and it would not
install updates. So, I did the fresh install. I ran two drive fitness
tests and all say the drive is fine. CHKDSK did not seem to function right.
With the /R switch it would not complete. CHKDSK, alone says the drive is
fine. The motherboard is approx 4 years old and may be the problem. k7s5a,
ECS Otherwise, everything is fine. The shut down is just weird and I was
looking for an explanation. Thanks again.
