Automatic Shutdown

This phenomenon occured only during the past few days. I used to be able to
shut down my PC by clicking on the icon "Turn Off Computer" and after the
screen showed "Saving My File" followed by "Windows is Shutting Down", the
screen freezes at this point and the computer does not shut down unless I
press the PC Stop button. Is the shutting down a function of the operating
system or is it a function of the motherboard? BTW, this phenomenon occurred
as I remembered when I replaced my Nvidia video card with an ATI Radeon. I
was instructed to delete some Nvidia drivers. Or perhaps it was coincidental.
Any suggestions how to correct this?

Click "Start" type in the "Run" box "msconfig" without quotes. Click the
Diagnostic Startup button and reboot the computer. Once restarted, shut it
down as you normally would. Does it shut down properly, or still hang?

Open MSCONFIG and check for unwanted programs running at startup,
particularly display utilities. (ATI's is called catalyst, and this is NOT
needed for normal display function)

Or, for a quick check you can terminate any such processes in Task Manager
and try shutting down.

It may also be that the driver has a bug. Check ATI/AMD's site for a later
one.

Are all those programs listed under System Config. Utilities/Services marked
"running" actually running at start up? There were many marked "running" and
others marked "stopped". My PC is slow booting up so I suppose many of this
programs is dragging the speed down. I will list the suspects and please tell
me if they are vital or not.

Sure appreciate your help.
