Recently my XP Home SP2 fully patched machine has started hanging 33-50
percent of the time during shutdown at the 'Windows is closing down' stage
and I have to turn it off with the power button. The only hardware change I
have made is adding a USB external drive, which is sometimes on and
sometimes off, but the hanging behavior occurs from time to time even when
this drive has not been used at all in the session. There is no one event or
situation I can identify that might cause the problem. I would be pleased if
someone could give me some pointers on how to troubleshoot this.

Hello Walt,
See Windows XP Shutdown & Restart Troubleshooting at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

See what Event Viewer has in it's log. Select Start button/ select Run , then type in

eventvwr.msc<enter>

-- or Go to Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance/Administrative Tools >Event Viewer.

Review the sections and look for Errors or Warnings.
Double click---the information "may" give a clue.

Thanks a lot -- it seems the cable connecting the hard drive to the computer
is failing.
