Shutdown Problem

For no reason I'm able to discern, Windows XP (Pro) shutdown hangs up on the
"Windows is shutting down" screen. If I shut off the power or hit the
hardware reset, there don't seem to be any ill effects, but I'd like to fix
it.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I read everything you referenced, but I have the latest of everything
installed and all the power management settings seem reasonable; haven't
change any anyway before this problem started.

I tracked down the culprit: It's the USB interface to my uninterruptible
power supply. If I yank the cable prior to shutdown, everything is okay.

What I don't know is why. It was working perfectly well for months. It's not
the UPS unit itself, because I carry this PC back and forth between two
locations with two separate UPS's (same model, though).

Ideas?
