Shutdown problem - only when hooked to DSL

Dell Inspiron 8200, WindowsXP Pro.

Recently added DSL. When I try to shut down or reboot, it hangs at "Windows
is now shutting down your computer". I have to manually hold down the power
button to get it to shut down.

When using the computer not hooked to DSL, it reboots and shuts down normally.

I have gone through the suggested websites for other shutdown problems
listed here, and could get no relief.

I've checked "Wake-up on LAN" in the BIOS, and this is disabled.

Thank you,
Ed

How is the DSL unit connected to your system? USB or Ethernet (RJ-45 plug)
network adapter? What level of service pack you have installed (SP1 or
SP2?)

Ethernet plug. SP2. Have run all updates.

Have run disk cleanup, defrag, scandisk, etc.

It will reboot in SafeMode.

Thank you, Yves.
