During shutdown XP shows blue screen with message "Windows is shutting
down...". Computer locks up at this point and unit must be manually turned
off. Any advice? Thanks!

i've found that some anti-viruses can cause this (especially panda).

try shutting down your anti-virus in your system tray. if you have an
"internet security" package that also has a firewall, you might want to
enable windows firewall through the control panel. enable windows
firewall, shutdown your security package, then try to shutdown.

i'm assuming you haven't installed the recovery console, correct?

Tr downloading and running ccleaner from ccleaner.com its free
also click on the tools and run the registry checker in the program
It usually fixes these issues

Thanks to all! I've got enough to keep me busy for the afternoon. Will let
you know how it goes.

Problem solved by resetting registry key as follows:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"PowerDownAfterShutdown"="1"

Please don't ask me to explain!

In a simultaneous posting you may have noted that I've solved my problem. I
did, however look at your second reference (KB810903), found the advice
"terrifying" and am glad I solved the problem before reading same!

Thanks anyhow!

I see you have advised some readers on "shutdown" of windows XP home.
My PC has just developed the task that on going to "start" then pick "turn
off computer" ..on going to turn off or restart...nothing happens so I have
to turn off at PC power source.
Any ideas?

To whom are you speaking? Since you didn't quote anything from previous
posts in some other thread, your post is orphaned.

In any case, if you are having shutdown problems go through this excellent
troubleshooter:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

And:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

I tried this website, but nothing helps. No, I havent done the recovery CD
yet, dont want to reload everything that is on my HP laptop. I am running XP
home SP2 with all the latest updates from Microsoft. I did notice that when i
turn off my welcome screen, it progressed one more step closer to shutdownl;
the screen prompt went away that said "windows is shutting down", and then
whole screen when one solid color blue, and hangs there forever unless I pull
the ac plug.
