Shutdown hangs at "Logging Off...."

I have one IBM laptop on the network that insists on
hanging at the "Logging Off...." screen. I have left this
sitting this way for an entire weekend. Powering off
seems to be the only alternative. Has anyone else seen
anything like this or know of a fix?

Win XP Pro SP1
All applicable patches
IBM R31 Celeron 1.2G 256M RAM

Some program or process is refusing to exit gracefully, which is why you
get the hanging. Look in Event Viewer for clues. Look at what programs
are running in the background. Minimize the number of programs and
services running. The fix is to determine what program or service is
having trouble.
