Shutdown freeze

B

Bill Proctor

I'm running Windows XP SP2, home edition.

I have Microsoft's AntiSpyware installed with the latest
software and definitions updates.

When I run a spyware scan and then try to shutdown my
system, I first get a window telling saying 'saving
settings'. My desktop disappears and a window on a blue
screen comes up saying 'Windows is shutting down". The
window disappears leaving the blue screen and the system
does not shut down.

My power button on my tower does not work and it is
necessary for me to manually rest the computer. As it
boots, I have to allow the check disk to run and it finds
no fault.

If I try to shutdown again immediately, it works OK.

I tried disabling the monitors but was unable to do so. The
real time protection screen says they are all active, but
individually when I click on the monitor, it says they are
inactive.

I am running other anti spyware programs to give me
complete protection. They include; Ad-Aware, Counter Spy,
Spybot S&D and Winpatrol.

Should I stop using Microsoft's Anti Spyware?

Hi Andre;
I did as you suggested. Both Microsoft AntiSpyware and
Norton Antivirus were updated earlier today. I booted into
safe mode and ram both. Neither found any problems or threats.

The shutdown problem still exists.

For now, try uninstalling Microsoft Antispyware. Be sure that anything that
is doing real-time monitoring in your other apps is turned off while you do
the uninstall.

Let's see whether that takes care of the shutdown issue. If it does not, I
would say that it isn't related to Microsoft Antispyware, at the root.

If it does, you can decide what to do. It is possible that another install
(preferably after deleting the installation folder (typically c:\program
files\microsoft antispyware)) will eliminate the symptom. However, you may
want to wait and look at Microsoft Antispyware again when beta2 is
announced.

I suspect there will be enough media attention around the release of beta2
that you won't have trouble noticing it!

Hi Bill
I checked with the Counter Spy web site
(sunbelt-software.com) and they said that there is a
conflict with Microsoft's AntiSpyware that is supposed to
be resolved in their version 1.5.

Sure enough, when I uninstalled Microsoft's AntiSpyware,
the freeze no longer exists. I'll be looking forward the
Beta2 and to version 1.4 of Counter Spy.

Thanks, Bill

Thanks--I missed a cue there when you mentioned counter spy--I should have
recalled that kind of issue. I believe their beta of the new version is
publicly available--might be worth trying.
