shutdown during startup

Help Needed!!

My Dell pc shutsdown right after I login to Windows XP. If I try to
powerup the pc again, the system shutsdown even sooner in the startup
process.

Initially I thought the problem was because the plastic heatsink
bracket was broken, and there was no heatsink for the cpu. I have
since replaced the heatsink bracket, and the system still shutsdown
during startup.

I have replaced the ols thermal compound with new thermal compound.
Question, could removing the old thermal compound be a issue? I used
iso alcohol 90% to remove the old thermal compound.

Any/All suggestions are welcomed. As always, thanks in advance.

What's in XP's Event Viewer?
Have you turned off XP's Automatically Restart option so you can see the
error?

don't look

You ran your cpu without a heatsink? Not good. But what you might want to
try is first,re-seat ram and cards in their slots.Something may have jogged
loose. Second, rmove non essential hardware from the system.Try starting with
minimum ram and mouse, keyboard and monitor. Nothing else.

The system doesn't boot or reboot at all. The system simply
shutsdown. I will remove all cards, but the system is pretty much a
bare bone system. Thanks for the responses.

It sounds like either your PSU or your motherboard have developed a thermal
fault. One of them needs to be replaced. If it was a non-Dell machine you
could easily just try installing a commonly available known working PSU and
see if that fixes it.

Can you get into the Dell BIOS ?

Does the Dell BIOS have a hardware monitor page ? On some
motherboards, there is a page in the BIOS screens, that lists
temperatures and voltages. You could start the machine (cold),
enter the BIOS, and view the hardware monitor page. And watch
the CPU temp, to see if it is shooting up.

Chances are, the CPU heatsink has not been fitted properly, like
a clip is loose or something. A thin layer of thermal paste should
be used, such that you can see a little bit of paste ooze out when
the heatsink is fully cranked into place. If a lot of paste squirts
out, you are using too much. If you don't see some paste
in the joint, you are using too little.

Also, verify that the CPU fan is plugged in, and is running. A
CPU fan can get gummed up with dust and debris, so check that
the fan blades move with little effort, when the machine is off.

Thanks for all of your feedback. Even though I still have the
problem.
