intel 630 proc temp

Hello,
I am new to building my own pc's and have just built one using an intel
board (945GNT) and the 630 3.0 GHz processor. I am embarrassed to say
that I did not know that there was a thermal compound on the bottom of
the heatsink (the heat sink that was provided with the processor). I
then removed it for some reason and only then realized that it had this
thermal pad attatched which was now ruined. A friend came over and put
some thermal compound he said was good stuff. He then helped bail me
out from there. Now, checking the temp of the processor he says it is
too high. We are getting a reading of 55C on the processor and 36C in
the case. Can someone tell me where this processor should be? My case
is a good case with 5 fans and we are testing the pc in a cold server
room. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Because a case has 5 fans doesn't necessarily make it a good case. What make
is it?
Why are you testing it in a cold server room? Is this going to be its final
location? If the PC is going to be working in a normal room environment,
then I would test it there, where the ambient temperature will be higher.
Some of these new Intels do run a bit warm, so 55c (is this idle or under
load?) may be OK. However, if that is idle temp in a cold room, then yes, it
is probably a bit high, especially if its going to be used in a normal room
environment.
