I'll listen to mp3's on the computer when I go to bed and would like to
set a timer to shut down at lets say 12:30 am. It would need to close
windows media player. Can this be done somehow with xp pro now? Or do I
need to get an addition program to do it?

Thanks

Shutting down the entire computer?
Look into (using the built in Help and Support) "Scheduled Tasks" and the
command "shutdown" (you can make a batch script or just issue the command
with correct syntax to do what you want - including forcing the applications
closed.)

If you want to just stop Media Player - same thing (Scheduled Tasks) - but
this time look into "taskkill" instead of "shutdown" for command syntax.
