i am i the procees of builidn gmy website and inadvertently published it, but
its not ready yet. how do i take it offline until its completed?

Just never tell anyone where it is located
or build a 1 page web
publish the new 1 page web which delete the pages out on the net
or open the web in the net and delete it.

Talking to the ISP may do no good, Eleanor, if the ISP is not also the host.

That's true ... My ISP hosts all my sites and they are just in the next town
.... very handy.

Connect to the server (via which ever means you published e.g. Frontpage
http:, ftp, or third party ftp etc) and delete the files.

or password protect it until it's ready

or just remove the "index" page so it will come up "not found" or similar,
usually the host or ISP's default "not found" message is displayed (404
server error).
