shut down problem

My XP pro system with an AMD 64 X2 processor exhibits the following
behavior: When I initiate a shut down, the computer appears to turn off
normally, but after about 30 seconds it restarts itself. I have been
trouble shooting this for two weeks now and have googled and read all I
could find on newsgroups and I have had mixed luck fixing the problem. Its
not likely bios settings or power supply problems or turn on calls from
installed hardware like NICs. I also tried removing various software,
disabling firewalls and anti-virus programs and so many things I couldn't
now recall them all. I recently got the system to turn off normally, but
then it required me to log on upon boot-up. Since I am the only user I
prefer an automatic log-on. When I changed the log on preferences to
automatic using control userpasswords2 command, the re-start problem
occurred. I changed the preferences back to manual log on, but the computer
now is stuck back in the restarts after 30 seconds mode. I've looked at the
event logs and I frequently see this warning:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 2/20/2007
Time: 9:39:20 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: NEWAMDX2
Description:
Windows saved user NEWAMDX2\Administrator registry while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the
user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is
no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

In response I installed UPHClean from the Microsoft site (I understand it
this forces the service to free up) and the re-start problem still exists.
I have probably tried most of the normal fixes for this problem, so maybe
someone out there can think out of the box and will see this from a
different view. I would appreciate any help.

Thank you

John
