I am having a problem shutting down XP. When I click on the start button,
the selection tree comes up but selecting anything in it does nothing. For
example, when I select turn off computer or log off or settings there is no
response. This is a new problem. I've been using XP for several months with
no such problem. To shut down I have to use the task manager. Any thoughts?

I'd be interested in an answer to this also. I have Norton's Internet
Security running on a Laptop and my desktop. Both had this problem but the
desktop has "healed" itself for some reason.

I have a friend whose machine is shutting down without warning, also.

HmS

i also have norton and often get a "dead page".i have tried other
antiviruses, which seem to pickup and remove bugs,-i dont know why norton
doesnt-but i have to turn the computer off manually as it takes forever...???

For some reason, the problem went away. I didn't mention before that the
pointer didn't work on any drop downs/favorites etc, although it worked to
select programs, files etc. Anyhow, it is over.
