Is there a way to have a shutdown button on the desktop? I have always
thought it strange to use the start button to stop the machine.

Hi Mark,

Yes there is, but read all of the cautions first before deciding that this
is a good idea for you:

I also show how to create a 'Continue' icon in case you double-click the
Shutdown icon by accident or change your mind. I would recommend you create
one of those in addition to the Shutdown icon if you go that route.

Hi Mark,

Yes. You can use the shutdown.exe console tool included by default in Windows XP/Vista. To know more, click Start, type "cmd /k shutdown /?" and press ENTER. You can create a shortcut to shutdown.exe (with valid parameters) on the desktop.

Alternately, you can configure the Power button to shutdown the system when clicked.
