Shut down error?

Hi all.
Windows XP home seems to hang at the shut down screen.It goes through the
saving your settings screen ok but when it actually get to the shut down
thats when it goes wrong.
When I chose to shut down I get unresponsive program error such as "IN CD"
and chose to end it immediately.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

PS:this is an itermittent error.

Have you checked for updates for the applications that seem to cause the
issue?
