Show icon when there is CD on the drive (like the Macintosh does)

Wishmaster

Hello,

is there any program that can show an icon, either in my desktop or in the
system tray, when there is a CD-ROM in my CD drive?

I remember that Mac OS (at least until version 9) did this (an icon on the
desktop) when you inserted a CD.

I use Windows XP.

Hi,
In Explorer click on My Computer and then right click on your CD drive on
the right side of the screen and left click on "Create Shortcut." A message
will appear stating that an icon cannot be created here and asks if you want
to put it on the desktop. Select Yes and the icon created on your desktop
should show that a CD-Rom is in the drive.

Hello,

I know only of shareware, so I won't mention it here.
you're welcome

What's WinEject?

WinEject is a small windows utility to open and close the tray of cd-rom
and DVD drives. Other removable media (like ZIP disks or streamer tapes)
can also be ejected.

Other features:
- Supports more than one drive
- Controllable with your mouse by clicking on an icon sitting in your
system tray
- Or use hotkeys to open and close your drives
- Eject on windows shutdown - you'll never forget your media!
- Lock drives
- Easy installation and deinstallation
- Runs with Win 95, 98, ME, NT, 2K & XP (Home/Professional)
- ...and much more!

Registration with a picture postcard:

If you'd like to use WinEject privately, you can register (for free) by
sending me a picture postcard.

Look for a picture postcard (preferably showing the town or area you're
living in). Write your first and last name as well as your email address
on it (clearly readable!).

Then, send it to this address:

As soon as I receive your postcard, I'll send you your personal
registration key to your email address.

No program needed.

On the Desktop, make a shortcut to the CD drive. If there is no CD in the
drive, the desktop icon will show the generic CD icon; if it contains a disk
it will change to the icon relevant to the CD.

To make the shortcut, right-click on MyComputer, right-click on the CD
Drive, click on "Make shortcut", Windows will offer to put it on the
Desktop, click "Yes".

You can change the generic icon shown on the shortcut to something more
distinctive by right-clicking the shortcut and choosing "Change Icon".

I can't think of a way to put the icon in the System Tray, but you could
copy it to the Quick Launch Bar (in XP, not sure about other systems) and
get it to show on the left of the Taskbar.

This looks as it it might do it -- although whilst it says "freeware",
it has an "order now" button on the page; maybe that refers to other
programs:

This will do. Thanks!

I want it to show an icon if, *and only if* there is a CD inserted: I often
forget to eject CD's.
