Show hidden files and folders does not work

hi guys, im working a friends computer and i cannot seem to rid him of this
problem. he has somem very BIG problems, regarding virus's and
spyware/malware. as im very good at this, ive removed lots of the items by
hand and using the assorted utils available.

however, the very last few need to be removed manually, and of course, they
are hidden.

i beleive it has something to do with winlogin.exe, a problem i have yet to
be able to remove, but to remove the specified files i need access to the
hidden files.

ive used various .vbs's tweaks from kellys corner, but then the windows
scripting host failed to kick in, and when it comes to a problem like that,
im a tad short on that end. going to tools>folders options> and setting show
system files and show hidden files to their respectve settings, results in no
action, and they reset themselves to not shown/hidden.

any tips would be great - as removing his hard drive and placing it in my
box would be easy, and would allow me to complete my task ASAP, id prefer to
figure this one out.

thank again, Costa

If you have not done such yet you should try booting into Safe Mode to do
repairs [including scanning]. You can also use the command prompt to see
files using the dir /A option to see files with specific attributes. For
instance use dir /a:h to see hidden files. You can also use del at the
command line to delete hidden files if you know the filename and path to it
as in del \c:filename /a:h. If you know the name of the malware often you
can Google for it and find specific removal instructions or tools to remove
the malware. --- Steve
