I inadvertantly left "Show Desktop Icons" unchecked (User Interface Core),
so I am unable to create any icons on the desktop (obviously!). Anyone know
if this is a simple registry setting that I could tweak before doing my
cloning thing?

Doug,

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced"], "HideIcons" (dword).

Or, respectively, change it for HKEY_CURRENT_USER or all the users you already got in your image.
