The show desktop icon is missing from the quick launch area of my
taskbar. How can I create a new shorcut that will show the desktop
not just take me to a folder with the contents of the desktop.
Create a text file in Notepad as follows:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Save it as Show Desktop.scf then drag it to the Quick launch bar.
Or just click on this link:
Restore/Add Show Desktop to Quick Launch (Line 61)

Also note that you can do this with a keyboard shortcut: the combination of
the Windows key + D or the Windows key + M.
As an aside, note that the Quick Launch Toolbar is just that--a toolbar, not
an area of the Task Bar. Although by default it appears *on* the Task Bar,
it is not actually part of the Task Bar itself, and any or all toolbars can
be dragged off the Task Bar and docked elsewhere on the screen. I
particularly like the configuration with the Task
Bar at the bottom of the screen and the Quick Launch bar at the left side.
