How may I remove all traces of WGA from a XP home system, and what would be the consequence?

True, if what you mean by "live updates" is going to the Windows Update
site to get the updates.

its perfectly possible. if you arent running Genuine Windows (like me, id
never pay for that rubbish) then its always wise to NOT install WGA in the
first place.

disable the Internet Explorer WGA add-on first. Apart from that, Google it.
 
Once installed, WGA is not designed to be removed. If you were
to attempt to remove it via third-party hacks, you'll likely corrupt
your Windows XP operating system and be required to reinstall.

You can always clean install and then don't download or install WGA.
