Shortcut wizard

P. H. Allen

I may have inadvertently done something to keep my new shortcut wizard from
functioning when I click on New/Shortcut at any screen. Attempting to set up
a shortcut produces only the New Shortcut icon, but no shortcut wizard
appears. The rundll32.exe is a process which normally runs when the wizard
appears, and that no longer appears in the process list in task manager. I
am running WinXP Home Edition. Any help/info is greatly appreciated. phasr

Allen,

Type this in Start, Run:

reg export HKCR\.lnk\ShellNew c:\lnknew.txt

Then open c:\lnknew.txt using Notepad and post the contents here.

Ramesh:

I had to make a slight change in your run string. Looking in the registry, I
found that the entry was ShellNew-, so I entered

reg export HKCR\.lnk\ShellNew- c:\lnknew.txt

The lnknew.txt contained the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk\ShellNew-]
"Command"="rundll32.exe appwiz.cpl,NewLinkHere %1"

Ramesh:

I went to another computer and found that the entry was listed ShellNew as
indicated by you, below.

I renamed the key from ShellNew- to ShellNew and all works as it should.

Thank you very much for your help in this matter. phasr
