Shortcut to editing

I use Word to edit documents and often find myself changing the same words
and phrases over and over again. Is there a way of getting to Word to
highlight certain words if they appear in a document? I thought I might be
able to remove them from the dictionary but that doesn't seem to be possible.
Someone suggested using a macro but I don't know whether that would work.

You can (sort of) remove them from the dictionary. See

Several options here:

You can set up an AutoCorrect for the composing phase.

You can use an Exclude Dictionary that would mark the words as misspelled.

You can use Find and Replace--you could either use F&R to change the words,
or you could use F&R to find all the problematic words and format them in
pink or something. A series of F&Rs can be recorded as a macro to run with
one click, if you are constantly changing the same words over and over again
(myself, I would not trust that for phrases).
