In windows 98 there was a shortcut on my task bar which
minimixed all open windows and showed the desktop.

How do i do this with windows XP home edition

Right click on the task bar, select "toolbars", check "Quicklaunch". It's
called show desktop.

It should be there on your QuickLaunch toolbar. That's on the taskbar
just to the right of the Start button. Hover the mouse over each icon
there, one of them should display a tooltip that says "Show Desktop".
Remember that the entire QuickLaunch bar may not be shown, click the
">>" symbol on the right end of the bar to show what's hidden.

The shortcut is called Show Desktop, and it's on the Quick Launch
Bar, not the Task Bar (the Quick Launch Bar is normally *on* the
Task Bar ). If you don't have a Quick Launch bar, right-click an
empty place on the Task Bar, choose Toolbars, then check Quick
Launch.

If you do have the Quick Launch bar, but have no Show Desktop
shortcut on it, create a text file in Notepad as follows:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save it as Show Desktop.scf then drag it to the Quick launch
bar.

Or just click on this link:
