Shortcut properties- Find Target error

R

Robert Keesling

Hello

With no response since 1/10/05, I'll repost with different subject wording,
to maybe get answer?

Hi All:
Unsure this is correct newsgroup, but suspect a registry error is causing my
problem.

Right-clicking on a desktop shortcut, selecting properties, and clicking on
Find Target opens the correct folder as Look IN in a search window, instead
of
pin-pointing the .exe that the shortcut would have executed. This is 100%
consistent result on this computer. Even a newly created shortcut has the
same result.
My other computers all operate normally.

In extensive searches of web, Microsoft, etc., I have found no
acknowledgement that anyone has had this problem.

Thanks for any suggestions

B. Keesling

What happens if you logon as a new user? (create a new account in 'Users and

Dave: Thanks for answering!
I created a new account and password, (also with administrative rights, as
my original), but the Shortcut-Find Target still opens the search window as
before.

I thought Tweakui might be bad, but Uninstall/reinstall of it made no
change.

I multi-partition & dual-boot all my systems, so I use the Find Target
function quite a lot. Re-installing Win2000 may be the only solution,
although everything else works just fine. Not finding the flaw really bugs
me!

Any further advice?

Thanks again.

Presuming full A-V and A-T and A-Ad scans were done. SFC has been
run and so on...

I did not answer since I've never heard of the described behavior.
Have you considered using tools like FILEMON and REGMON (from
sysinternals) on the problem machine? Possibly comparing results
with a "known normal" system?

Dave: Sorry not to have gotten back sooner. Slow progress and other events
intervened. See notes below.

This URL is broken, but I had printed and filed this Q some time back.
Decided against this approach since in Q306952 it appears In-Place would
have set my active W2k back to ground zero.
Instead I tried using KB318149 (back-up and restoring Registry) that I have
used with success in past.
Misfortunate that earliest Rb*.cab I had saved was not early enough to be
before Find Target problem!!
So... have installed a parallel,dual-booting, W2k (per Q266465) in an
available partition, added SP4, all 34 MS updates, and slowly adding
programs that were running in original W2k, checking "Find target" to see
which breaks it. This will take a WHILE! I will post any important results.

Thanks for your suggestions. From what I observe on this and other W2k
groups, you are doing a good job of monitoring our sometimes dumb troubles.

Hi Mark:
My experience, too, that I could not find help from ANYWHERE/ONE that this
problem had ever occurred.

A-V = Anti-Virus - yes, Norton, full scan with most recent definitions
A-T = ??? Not sure what this means?
A-Ad = Ad Aware? -yes, most recent definitions, run regularly, perhaps
average weekly
SFC , yes, No errors, or Missing files
Have also run:
Qfecheck, All MS patches -Current on system.
Spybot-Search & Destroy v.1.3-Fixed/removed everything found.

I just now started looking at Sysinternal's Regmon, to see what it may show.

See my reply to Dave Patrick above for details of my present status.

Thanks for answering.

Anti-Trojan. Anti-Virus apps sometimes detect *some* Trojan
software, but are not dedicated to that task.

I see your parallel installation in other post. Not a bad solution
at all, though time consuming. You may never find the original
cause of the problem as you must guess by now. In any case please
follow up should you determine any more particulars. Good luck.

Had the same thing - previously had installed "treesize" trial. Once I had
removed the program, "find target" and "open containing folder" started
working properly again.

Hope this is of some use,

Sorry for the "treesize" thing, but found this here:
http://myweb.accessus.net/~090/win2ktip.html#search

"Whenever you double-click on a folder in windows
explorer, instead of it opening the folder it opens up a
search window instead. Try this to fix it...

Click Start, Run and enter "RegEdit". Look for the
following:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

Locate the Default value and double click on Default. Set
this value to "none" (without the quotes). It probably
reads "find", now. "

Mine didn't read 'find' but the thing actually works if
you set the default to "none" without the quotes.
