Shortcut problem

I've created a shortcut to one of the server shared drive and it works fine.
But then from time to time doubleclicking on that shortcut will give an error
message saying that the resource is unavailable. I am 100% sure that there is
nothing wrong with my network since I can ping it and beside if I go to
Start->Run and type in the exact UNC pathname to the share resource it will
work but then if I try to doubleclick on the shortcut which has the SAME UNC
pathname it will NOT work. After 4 to 7 try it will eventually work. This is
really frustrating...anybody know the answer I really appreciate it.

P.S I'm a PC veteran so give me technical answer if you can.

With Windows Networking, "Resource unavailable" could have a dozen causes. An
intermittent problem, like yours, may be caused by a browser problem (NOT the
program that you use to surf the web).

First, check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous.

If you would like help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, as a diagnostic aid. Read this article, and linked articles, and
follow instructions precisely:

I've turned off Window Firewall and allow anonymous login. What I am saying
is that if I use the Start->Run option and type in the shared drive UNC path
it works, but if I doubleclick on the shortcut which has the SAME UNC path it
doesnt work or that it works very erratically (sometime it works and sometime
it doesnt). This is not a firewalled or network problem since there is
response from serve to ping command.

Ryan,

Well, a "resource unavailable" error could be anything from no connectivity to
no permissions assigned. A "sometimes it works, other times not" scenario can
be caused by a browser problem, or maybe an intermittent hardware failure.

When a shortcut does, or doesn't work, is there any pattern? How long after
working does it stop working? Or does it stop working after rebooting one or
more computers? If this is not a firewalled or network problem, what do YOU
think that it is? If not a Network problem, maybe you're in the wrong forum -
this is Microsoft.Public.WindowsXP.Network_Web. We know network problems.

Let's take a look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer,
as a start. Keep an open mind, maybe we will find the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:
